Silver Dollar Fish Help plz?
My gram has 3 silver dollar fish like 8 year old or older and one has a lump down low about the size of a pea little bigger inside nothing out of the skin and its kinda floating on its side .My gram said it looks like it its constipated ((haha)) can a fish get that? I think it looks like it has a tumor any one know what it could be ? or what to do?
Answer:
It is very possible that the fish has a tumor of some sort. If it was a rapid onset kind of thing, it is also very possible that the fish is constipated.
They get constipated from eating a lot of dry, dehydrated foods. Fish flakes, pellets, sticks, etc. can all get bound up inside causing constipation.
An easy way to relieve constipation is to get a small amoun to frozen peas, put them into a cup with some of the water from the fish tank and allow them to dethaw. Then, once dethawed, gently squeeze a single pea so that it pops out of it's shell. Feed these thawed, deshelled peas to the constipated fish, and any other fish as well.
Peas are a natural laxative for fish and relieve constipation quickly. Try feeding it for several meals in a row to see if there is any improvement. For future reference, feed a meal of thawed, deshelled peas once a week or so to prevent constipation.
When a fish is constipated for quite some time, further bodily damage can occur. Problems with the swim bladder can cause swellings and difficulty staying bouyant as well!
Also, check the water parameters to check ammonia, nitrite and nitrate levels. A partial water change is always a good idea when fish are feeling ill as well as once week. If water parameters are too high, then do a partial water change to bring those levels down to normal.
