Save The Rainforests, Save Your Company

The massive oil spill inside the Gulf of Mexico is a big warning call for all of us. We all ought to cautiously contemplate the negative effect that the actions of corporations and individuals are having on our planet's ecological system. A lot has been said and will continue to be said about BP and the PR nightmare it caused itself through the record oil spill within the Gulf of Mexico. But you might not have heard that there's an additional ongoing environmental controversy centered around the issue of deforestation and corporation known as Asia Pulp and Paper (APP). Small businesses and organizations far and wide may learn a great lesson from the pickle APP finds itself in. APP is really a division belonging to the mega corporation, Sinar Mas, and refers to itself as one of the earth's foremost pulp and paper producers.

APP has of late been linked to being a significant contributor to deforestation. Deforestation, the human-caused destruction of naturally occurring forests through logging or burning, is a gigantic dilemma in today's world. It is estimated that around 50% or more of the world's plant and animal life reside in the 7% of the world where rainforests presently exist. For example, the most well-known of rainforests, the Amazon, a wondrous 1.4 billion acre rainforest in the heart of South America covering sections of nine separate countries, has only 82.3% of the moist broadleaf jungle cover it had in 1970. It is also estimated that between 1991 and 2000, the overall loss of Amazon rainforest increased from 415,000 square kilometers to approximately 600,000. The above data is according to Wikipedia.

Another lesser known however equally struggling rain forest, the Indonesian rainforest, has made recent headlines subsequent to a report from Greenpeace. In the details, Greenpeace accuses Asia Paper and Pulp of "relentlessly trashing rainforests, driving species extinction and, if left unchecked, will threaten Indonesia's efforts to address climate change." According to CNN.com, Indonesia is one of the planet's major culprits of emitting greenhouse emissions mainly due to clear-cutting and burning of rainforests for logging and other reasons such as farming. Indonesia has long been a recipient of condemnation for its environmental tactics mainly due to disregard for global and even their own laws. Asia pulp and paper is currently going through a public relations nightmare as a result of Greenpeace report, and of course is saying Greenpeace's claims are exaggerated. Yet things a short time ago took a wrong turn for Sinar Mas as in July, 2010 Wal-Mart (already becoming a major advocate for transitioning its customer base to the use of sustainable reusable green bags) announced they have "taken steps to stop" purchasing their paper, because of this and other controversies surrounding APP. It appears that APP's denial of the problem is making things worse and currently costing them major business. The loss of Wal-Mart's business over the next year should drastically influence their total sales.

This leads us to an excellent question: In today's struggling global economy, how can businesses ensure they are instituting environmentally-friendly and energy efficient business practices and never on the wrong side of a PR controversy? Business.Gov, the official business link to the US Government, features a 10 step guide to help businesses ensure they are energy efficient, meeting the requirements of environmental rules, and recognized as a green business. Listed here are the steps: Be in accordance with Environmental Regulations, Develop an Environmental Management Plan, Build Green, Acquire Eco friendly Products, Agree to Energy Efficient Practices, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Wastes, Preserve Water, Prevent Polluting of the environment, Make a Green Marketing communications Strategy, and Connect with Industry Partnership and Stewardship Programs.

Step 4 Obtain Green Products, is a superb idea that a great many companies fail to consider. A unique method to boost awareness about deforestation at the same time as marketing your brand is through eco promotional products like seed paper, that is made of actual seeds and can still take root and sprout into a beautiful flower when planted. Something as simple as seed cards such as a seed business card or a seeded thank you card can make for a truly memorable interaction with a client or industry colleague. You could potentially also incorporate a statement regarding deforestation on the stationary, which makes it absolutely clear about where your business stands out on environmental issues. Another one that stands out on this list is step 6, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle Wastes. Remembering to reduce and reuse is the best way to get rid of the need to recycle in the first place. Now is the time to take action to stop deforestation in addition to ensuring your company is recognized as a green business, as a consequence solidifying your sustainable reputation. The 10 steps above are a terrific guide for any business owner or CEO to execute eco friendly practices as part of your business. Embrace the challenge of perpetually improving your organization's ecological footprint. Your company's leadership and example can help end the terrible effects of deforestation and the investment is going to be well worth it.
