Frequently Asked Questions...
Transplanting Vegetables?
I have no problem growing the plants from seed using the Jiffy peat pellets but once I transplant them into a pot for my patio they start to look a bit droopy after a few days. They tend to get a little yellow around the edges but they haven't died completely yet. Also, they don't seem to be growing as rapidly as were before they were transplanted. This is mainly happening to my tomatoes, both regular sized and cherry. Is there something wrong that I'm doing? Thank you so much for your help, all suggestions are appreciated!
P.S. I live on Maui, just in case the climate makes a difference in your answer.
Answer:
It sounds like they aren't getting enough water or are exposed to too much heat. When you transplant them, do it at a cool time of day and make sure to water them very well. If there are air pockets in the soil when you transplant them, that can disrupt the plant's ability to absorb water, causing wilting and slowed growth for a while.
Also, keep them in a cooler place for the first couple of days because plants become very stressed when transplanted.
Also, make sure that the new soil that you transplant them into has enough nutrients. When you water potted plants, the nutrients (nitrogen and phosphorus, mainly) get washed out. If the soil is poor, the leaves can turn yellow.
