Vegetables in Containers-- What to do on vacation?
I'm headed out of town for 10 days, and I live in Southern California. How can I keep my tomatoes, peppers, and herbs from dying? I am considering glass watering spheres, Soil Moist polymer granules, or simply putting my plants in pie pans of water. They are in terra cotta pots. Thoughts?
Answer:
Make sure your plants are heavily mulched to conserve water. You can make a drip irrigation system from plastic soda, milk or juice containers by poking a couple of pin holes in the side near the bottom, fill them with water, leaving the lids off or at least loose, and placing one or more near each plant. If you have time before you leave you can experiment with the bottle size, number and size of holes and how many you need for each container. If not, at least your plants won't be entirely without water while you are gone.
